{"id":1950,"date":"2026-06-17T04:08:32","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T04:08:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1950"},"modified":"2026-06-17T04:08:32","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T04:08:32","slug":"empathie-wins-grand-jury-prize-the-pitt-named-best-drama-at-banff-world-media-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1950","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Empathie\u2019 Wins Grand Jury Prize, \u2018The Pitt\u2019 Named Best Drama at Banff World Media Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tThe French-language series <em>Empathie<\/em> from screenwriter Lorence Longpre picked up the Grand Jury Prize at the Banff World Media Festival\u2019s Rockie Awards on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1948\">Stanley Cup Final Scores Largest TV Audience Since 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Canadian series from Trio Orange, which also won for best non-English language drama, the Prix Francophone and the Prize for Excellence in Canadian Content, sees Longpre play a criminologist-turned-psychiatrist in a Montreal hospital where she meets an eclectic group of patients. \u201cI would like to thank the whole team for this Rockie Award,\u201d Longpre said in a pre-taped video to accept the Grand Jury Prize at the Rockie Awards.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAnd in the best English-language drama category, HBO\u2019s <em>The Pitt <\/em>took top honors, beating out Canada\u2019s\u00a0<em>Heated Rivalry\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Plan B\u00a0<\/em>series, another U.S. series in\u00a0<em>The Handmaid\u2019s Tale<\/em>\u00a0and the British drama\u00a0<em>Reckless.<\/em> \u201cAs a Canadian boy, it\u2019s so good to be home, I have to say,\u201d R. Scott Gemmill, the series creator and a Canadian-born writer and producer, said when accepting the honor at the gala ceremony in the Canadian Rockies.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tElsewhere, the best English-language comedy honor went to HBO\u2019s <em>The Chair Company,<\/em> and Malin Akerman won for best drama performance for her turn in Netflix\u2019s <em>The Hunting Wives<\/em>. \u201cThis role is one of my favorite roles I\u2019ve ever got to play. She is one spicy gal,\u201d Akerman said of her performance as Margo Banks when coming on stage at the Banff Springs Hotel\u2019s conference center to pick up her award.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe best feature film prize, presented by Lori O\u2019Connor, executive vp and publisher, and Mikey O\u2019Connell, senior entertainment editor at <em>The Hollywood Reporter,<\/em> went to <em>Mountainhead, Succession <\/em>creator Jesse Armstrong\u2019s movie directorial debut. <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt really very touching to see British TV \u2014 I come from the U.K. \u2014 and American TV, but we can sometimes be very inward looking. And to be reminded of some of the amazing work that\u2019s made all around the world and to be considered amongst it and take home an award, I feel really very honored to be among everyone,\u201d Armstrong said when accepting his trophy.<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Wayward<\/em> creator and comic Mae Martin, who picked up the Creative Voice Award, told the Rockies Awards audience she\u2019d managed to overcome her customary Canadian humility about career success. \u201cNow I\u2019m sort of admitting I\u2019m very ambitious, and I really love the process of making things and collaborating with other artists,\u201d she said on stage. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1946\">What Hollywood Can Teach Harvard<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn other special prize giving, Canadian indigenous actor Tantoo Cardinal (<em>Killers of the Flower Moon, Dances with Wolves<\/em>) earned the career achievement award. \u201cFirst time I came here, I hitchhiked here, and they didn\u2019t kick me out,\u201d Cardinal said of first coming to the Banff World Media Festival. \u201cWe were not First Nations then. We were being treated with comatose medicine to hide the power of the treaties and then to hide the truth of just how deeply justice and humanity were not for us in this great society,\u201d Cardinal said of her upbringing in a Canada that oppressed its indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut that changed when she and other First Nations creatives began telling indigenous stories in Canada and elsewhere. \u201cA lot of work has gone into this powerful tapestry of strength of beauty,\u201d Cardinal added of her career legacy and that of other indigenous artists.  <\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe Rockie Awards also honored <em>Community\u00a0<\/em>star\u00a0Ken Jeong with the Sir Peter Ustinov comedy award. \u201cI don\u2019t stand here because of me. I stand here because of <em>Community,<\/em> because the people who gave me opportunities when I was just a doctor at Kaiser Permanente in Woodland Hills,\u201d Jeong told the Banff audience as he paid tribute to the popular Dan Harmon comedy and other early career opportunities. <\/p>\n<p>\n\tAnd\u00a0<em>Beverly Hills,<\/em>\u00a0<em>90210<\/em>\u00a0actor\u00a0Jason Priestley was in Banff to receive the Canadian Award of Distinction after recently starring in the homegrown procedural <em>Private Eyes<\/em>. Priestley, who cut his teeth as an actor on local film and TV sets as a child before becoming a star in Hollywood, said on stage: \u201cI owe my career and much of my life to the Canadian film and television industry. I thank you for this important recognition.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\n\tAlso Tuesday night, the best animated series competition was won by <em>The Simpsons <\/em>on Fox, and the best performance trophy in a comedy went to Aimee Lou Wood for the British comedy series <em>Film Club<\/em>.
