{"id":1702,"date":"2026-06-12T14:07:30","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T14:07:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1702"},"modified":"2026-06-12T14:07:30","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T14:07:30","slug":"controversial-musical-slam-frank-announces-move-to-off-broadway-with-provocative-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1702","title":{"rendered":"Controversial Musical \u2018Slam Frank\u2019 Announces Move to Off-Broadway With\u00a0Provocative Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tThe most incendiary musical\u00a0comedy\u00a0of 2025 will advance to\u00a0the\u00a0off-Broadway\u00a0Orpheum Theatre\u00a0in October, and its creators are marking the show\u2019s return with, not surprisingly, two provocative events.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1700\">Winners &amp; Losers: \u2018Social Reckoning\u2019 Trailer Misfires, Emily Blunt Saves \u2018Disclosure Day\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe box office for\u00a0<em>Slam Frank<\/em>,<strong><\/strong>which reimagines Anne Frank\u2019s story through an\u00a0\u201cintersectional, multiethnic, genderqueer, Afro-Latin hip-hop lens,\u201d according to the producers, opens\u00a0on June 12, the birthday of the Jewish teen whose diary of her family\u2019s life\u00a0hiding from the Nazis became a classic of Holocaust literature.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe following week,\u00a0on June 19\u00a0\u2014 Juneteenth \u2014\u00a0the show\u2019s producers will host what they are calling \u201cOff-Broadway\u2019s First Annual Official Belated Pro-Diversity, Pre-Julyteenth,\u00a0Cismasc-Affirming, Anti-Capitalist,\u00a0LatinX, Anne Frank\u202f <em>Fiesta de\u00a0Quincea\u00f1era\u201d\u00a0<\/em>at the Orpheum on Second Avenue in Manhattan\u2019s East Village.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tTheatergoers who attend the event, which\u00a0begins at 5 p.m.,\u00a0will have the opportunity to purchase select seats for $36 and remaining seats\u00a0\u2014 which go for $50-$140, at a\u00a0$36\u00a0discount. (A rep for the show explains that 36 is a factor of 18, which in Hebrew numerology symbolizes life.) Special guests and performances are also promised.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tDirected by Sam LaFrage, previews of\u00a0<em>Slam Frank<\/em>\u00a0will begin\u00a0on Sept. 17, the one-year anniversary of the show\u2019s\u00a0developmental\u00a0run at The Asylum in Midtown. I\u2019m Its First Target<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Slam Frank<\/em>\u00a0was inspired by an actual, viral\u00a02022\u00a0Twitter thread that asked\u00a0if\u00a0Anne Frank ever acknowledged\u00a0her\u00a0\u201cwhite privilege,\u201d\u202fand imagines what happens when a progressive community theater company transforms Frank\u2019s story into a\u00a0hyper-woke parable. Co-created by Joel Sinensky and Andrew Fox, who composed the music, which, he has said, was influenced by a wide range of artists, including Kanye West, Stephen Sondheim, Lin-Manuel Miranda,\u00a0Jason Robert Brown\u00a0and Wilson Phillips.\u00a0Fox\u00a0also\u00a0has said the play\u2019s politics are intentionally\u00a0elusive, but its main target is\u00a0identity-politics excesses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFox also\u00a0spearheads the play\u2019s often inflammatory Instagram\u00a0<u>account<\/u>, which now boasts 98,000 followers and\u00a0helped generate sold-out crowds at The Asylum without benefit of a marketing budget.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCritics called <em>Slam Frank\u202f<\/em>one of the boldest theatrical experiences of 2025.\u00a0Former\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0theater critic Ben Brantley praised the musical on social media as \u201cthe most important show around,\u201d and the\u00a0<em>Times<\/em>\u00a0named it the \u201cFunniest Spoof of the Left\u201d in its Best Comedy of 2025 recap.
