\n\tDavid Burke, the theater veteran who portrayed Dr. Watson alongside Jeremy Brett on the acclaimed 1984-85 ITV series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes<\/em>, died May 10, his agent announced. He was 91.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn the stage, Burke starred in the original 1973-74 production of Alan Ayckbourn\u2019s Absurd Person Singular<\/em> at the Criterion Theatre in London, and for the National Theatre, he starred as Daniel Day-Lewis\u2019 ghostly father in Hamlet in 1989, as the Danish physicist Niels Bohr in Michael Frayn\u2019s Copenhagen<\/em> in 1998 and as the Earl of Kent opposite Ian Holm in King Lear<\/em>, also in 1998.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an interview with the Times<\/em> of London, Burke recalled when Day-Lewis apparently mistook the ghost for his own father. \u201cAs the ghost disappears, I said, \u2018Farewell, farewell, remember me,\u2019 then when I looked back, Dan had gone,\u201d he recalled. \u201cWe found him backstage on the floor, sobbing his eyes out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBurke appeared on all 13 episodes of Granada Television\u2019s The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes<\/em>, starting with Arthur Conan Doyle\u2019s \u201cA Scandal in Bohemia.\u201d He performed the part not as a bumbler (as Nigel Bruce had done alongside Basil Rathbone in the Sherlock Holmes films of the 1930s and \u201940s) but as a competent collaborator.<\/p>\n

\n\tHowever, Burke decided not to continue as Watson \u2014 \u201cI was getting bored of saying, \u2018Good heavens, Holmes!\u2019\u201d he noted \u2014 and was replaced by Edward Hardwicke, who took on the sidekick role in subsequent series and telefilms through 1994\u2019s The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe son of a ship steward, David Patrick George Burke was born in Liverpool on May 25, 1934. He won a scholarship to Oxford and was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter graduating, Burke worked with Peter O\u2019Toole at the Bristol Old Vic and met his future wife, actress Anna Calder-Marshall, when both were performing in Ibsen\u2019s The Wild Duck<\/em> at the Edinburgh Lyceum. (Brian Cox helped the couple get together.)<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 1963, he appeared on episodes of The Avengers<\/em>, Z Cars<\/em> and Coronation Street<\/em> and two years later appeared as the playboy thief Sir George Burnwell in \u201cThe Adventure of the Beryl Coronet,\u201d an episode of the BBC\u2019s Sherlock Holmes<\/em>, starring Douglas Wilker as Holmes and Nigel Stock as Watson.<\/p>\n

\n\tBurke called Brett \u201ca delightful man. He was a great perfectionist. I mean, he carried his book of Sherlock Holmes stories around with him, almost like a bible \u2026 Not merely did he keep a very close eye on the dialogue remaining faithful, but also, when we were actually filming, he would concern himself, in the nicest possible way, with making sure everybody was dressed correctly and that the action mirrored what it said in the book.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBurke also played Joseph Stalin opposite Sam Neill on the 1983 miniseries Reilly, Ace of Spies<\/em> and appeared on the series Crown Court<\/em>, Poirot<\/em> and The House of Eliott<\/em> and in the 2012 film adaptation of The Woman in Black<\/em>, starring Daniel Radcliffe.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Tom Burke, also an actor (the BBC\u2019s Strike<\/em>, Netflix\u2019s Legends<\/em>). The late Alan Rickman was his godfather.<\/p>\n
