\n\tIn what may well be a preview of things to come this awards season, Toy Story 5<\/em>, the latest installment in Disney\/Pixar\u2019s beloved 31-year-old animated film franchise,\u00a0was the toast of Hollywood on Tuesday night at the Dolby Theatre, the home of the Oscars.<\/p>\n

\n\tA-listers ranging from the Duffer brothers to Teyana Taylor to Jimmy Kimmel (and their kids) convened for the world premiere of what proved to be a smart, funny and moving film about screens displacing toys in the lives of young children. And attendees of all ages were ecstatic when the film was followed by a surprise live performance, by Taylor Swift, the biggest pop star on the planet, of its end-credits original song \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You\u201d (which Swift co-wrote with Jack Antonoff), and then a Swift and Randy Newman duet of Newman\u2019s classic tune from the first Toy Story<\/em>, \u201cYou\u2019ve Got a Friend in Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAt the premiere\u2019s after-party outside of the Dolby on a closed-down, festively-decorated Hollywood Blvd., industry insiders \u2014\u00a0including Academy members \u2014 gushed to me about both the film and the song, and remarked upon the clear commitment by all involved to give the film a big push, both into theatrical release nationwide on June 19 and into the awards season. \u201cThey really pulled out all the stops for this,\u201d remarked one.<\/p>\n

\n\tIndeed, come awards season, Toy Story 5<\/em> will be hard to stop in all races for best animated feature and best original song, and could also factor into best picture and best adapted screenplay competitions. Aside from being immensely entertaining, the film also has something profound to say about the world today. And it is extremely well made, which is unsurprising given that it is a production of Pixar and was co-written and directed by Andrew Stanton, who was also a writer on the four prior Toy Story<\/em> films and directed 2003\u2019s Finding Nemo<\/em> and 2008\u2019s WALL-E<\/em>, both of which were awarded the best animated feature Oscar.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs for Swift and her frequent collaborator Antonoff\u2019s original tune? It\u2019s a wistful, country-infused love song that evokes Swift classics like \u201cOur Song\u201d and \u201cbetty,\u201d and in my humble opinion it would fit right in and hold its own on a Swift concert setlist. Just as importantly, in terms of its awards prospects, Swift \u2014 who is 36 and grew up with the Toy Story<\/em> films \u2014 seems genuinely excited about, invested in, and willing to support this film and song.<\/p>\n

\n\tIndeed, she walked the red carpet; posed for photos with the film\u2019s cast and crew, as well as Disney and Pixar execs; sat through much of the film before heading backstage; and then, when the curtain came up on her, didn\u2019t just sing, but gushed. \u201cIt means the world to me to be a small part of the universe of these films,\u201d she declared following her performance of \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You.\u201d \u201cAnd Toy Story 5<\/em> is my favorite of all of the Toy Story<\/em>s. I\u2019m so lucky that I get to be a part of this. And I want to thank all of the creators at Disney and Pixar for all the work they put into this film. It\u2019s insanely beautiful, it\u2019s a masterpiece, we\u2019re so lucky to get to have this film out, your work is amazing, and I hope you\u2019re all so proud of yourselves \u2014\u00a0if you\u2019re in this room and you worked on this film, thank you so much!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe continued, \u201cI would like to say that Joan Cusack has done such an extraordinary job as Jessie [the two-time Oscar nominee voiced the film\u2019s central character]\u2026 I\u2019m very lucky that I got to write for this film, and that\u2019s all thanks to Andrew Stanton and Kenna Harris\u2026 who thought of me and reached out to me and let me to get to experience it and be inspired by it. But I\u2019m also lucky enough to be here because of someone else who is the architect of the Toy Story<\/em> musical universe. He is the king of making us feel the absolute most and pulling at our heartstrings and making us laugh and making us feel like he\u2019s one of our friends. I\u2019m talking about Randy Newman.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnother curtain then came up to reveal Newman seated at a piano, to which Swift walked over. She said, \u201cHey, Randy!\u201d He replied, \u201cHey! That\u2019s very kind of you, thanks for the kind words,\u201d before cracking, \u201cI deserve them!\u201d After the audience\u2019s laughter subsided, he quickly added, \u201cNo, I don\u2019t deserve them. You<\/em> do a hell of a song.\u201d She replied, \u201cOh, thank you so much!\u201d He emphasized, \u201cIt was really<\/em> nice.\u201d And she blushed, \u201cThis feels like a really good day, just personally!\u201d They then traded verses of \u201cYou\u2019ve Got a Friend in Me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNo animated film franchise has enjoyed greater success at the Academy Awards than the Toy Story<\/em> film franchise. 1995\u2019s original Toy Story<\/em>, which preceded by six years the introduction of the best animated feature Oscar category, was Oscar-nominated for best original screenplay, best original score and best original song (\u201cYou\u2019ve Got a Friend in Me,\u201d music and lyrics by Newman). A special achievement award was also presented to Pixar\u2019s chief at the time: \u201cTo John Lasseter, for his inspired leadership of the Pixar Toy Story<\/em> team, resulting in the first feature-length computer-animated film.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t1999\u2019s Toy Story 2<\/em> was nominated for just the best original song Oscar (\u201cWhen She Loved Me,\u201d music and lyrics by Newman). But 2010\u2019s Toy Story 3<\/em> soared to Oscar noms for best picture \u2014\u00a0it was just the third animated film to be named a finalist in the overall top category, after 1991\u2019s Beauty and the Beast<\/em> and 2009\u2019s Up<\/em> \u2014\u00a0as well as best adapted screenplay, best animated feature, best original song (\u201cWe Belong Together,\u201d music and lyrics by Newman) and best sound editing. It won best animated feature and best original song.<\/p>\n

\n\t2019\u2019s Toy Story 4<\/em>, meanwhile, was nominated for best animated feature and best original song (\u201cI Can\u2019t Let You Throw Yourself Away,\u201d music and lyrics by Newman), and won best animated feature.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn short, all four prior Toy Story<\/em> films have been nominated for the best original song Oscar, and both Toy Story<\/em> films that were released after the establishment of the best animated feature Oscar were nominated for and won that award.<\/p>\n

\n\tGiven the quality of Toy Story 5<\/em> and the relatively thin field of animated features this year (others to look out for include Disney\/Pixar\u2019s Hoppers<\/em> and Netflix\u2019s Cannes acquisition In Waves<\/em>), it seems almost certain that this latest installment will also be nominated for \u2014\u00a0and quite possibly win \u2014\u00a0best animated feature.<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd although \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You\u201d is the first original song Oscar contender for a Toy Story<\/em> film that was not<\/em> written by Newman, Swift certainly looks well-positioned to land the first Oscar nomination of her illustrious career (on the heels of two buzzed-about tunes from lower-profile films that didn\u2019t quite pan out, \u201cOnly the Young\u201d from 2020\u2019s Miss Americana<\/em> and \u201cCarolina\u201d from 2022\u2019s Where the Crawdads Sing<\/em>).<\/p>\n

\n\tKeep in mind just how highly regarded she is by her peers (she has received 58 Grammy nominations and won 14 Grammys, including album of the year four<\/em> times, something no other artist has ever done) and by critics (the New York Times<\/em> just included her \u2014\u00a0and, oddly enough, not<\/em> Newman \u2014\u00a0on its list of the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters).<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd keep in mind the Academy\u2019s recent history of recognizing popular young singer\/songwriters, including Adele (Oscar for 2012\u2019s \u201cSkyfall\u201d), Pharrell (Oscar nom for 2013\u2019s \u201cHappy\u201d), Common and John Legend (Oscar for 2014\u2019s \u201cGlory\u201d), Sam Smith (Oscar for 2015\u2019s \u201cWriting\u2019s on the Wall\u201d), Justin Timberlake (Oscar nom for 2016\u2019s \u201cCan\u2019t Stop the Feeling!\u201d), Lady Gaga (Oscar for 2018\u2019s \u201cShallow\u201d), SZA (Oscar nom for 2018\u2019s \u201cAll the Stars\u201d), H.E.R. (Oscar for 2021\u2019s \u201cFight for You\u201d) and Billie Eilish (Oscars for 2021\u2019s \u201cNo Time to Die\u201d and 2023\u2019s \u201cWhat Was I Made For\u201d). A tune like \u201cI Knew It, I Knew You\u201d featured in a film like Toy Story 5<\/em> would certainly not look out of place in this company.<\/p>\n
