\n\tIn Jack Thorne\u2018s unsparing and often harrowing adaptation of William Golding\u2019s classic novel Lord of the Flies<\/em>, honoring the source material ruled the day: \u201cOur biggest aim in the entire telling of this show was to be incredibly faithful to what Golding had done,\u201d says the Emmy-winning writer for Adolescence<\/em>. That did not always mean strict scene-by-scene repetition, however \u2014 far from it. Each of the Netflix hit\u2019s four episodes was told through the lens of one of the main boys stranded on an uninhabited island, making dangerous choices to govern themselves and survive. In this excerpt from the third installment, we see a pivotal interaction between the cocky Jack (Lox Pratt) and the relatively subdued Simon (Ike Talbut) that enhances the themes of the original novel. \u201cI tried to lean in to complicating the story rather than simplifying the story,\u201d Thorne says. \u201cAnd Jack and Simon\u2019s relationships with their fathers have a lot of similarities to them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJack has just relayed to Simon a story his father often tells him about a 10-day hike from his youth that made him the man he is today, to signal that this, too, could be an experience of proving one\u2019s mettle. It\u2019s insight we get into the character because he\u2019s speaking to Simon, specifically. \u201cThis is the first proper time we\u2019ve seen Jack and Simon alone,\u201d Thorne says. \u201cAnd we see that when they\u2019re alone, they talk in a different way than when they\u2019re around people \u2014 and that\u2019s accepted by both of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSimon is challenging Jack in a way we haven\u2019t heard him do before this point in the series. For Thorne, that turn is crucial to the adaptation for two reasons. One: \u201cSimon was me when I was a kid \u2014 he was the outsider who doesn\u2019t really understand the logic of friendship.\u201d And two: This imagined new scene offered an opportunity to honor Golding\u2019s writing in a fresh way. \u201cSimon is revealing a different side of his character, but actually he does in the book show this slightly flinty edge a few times,\u201d Thorne explains.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe lessons that Jack has taken from his father are crucial for how you understand Jack on this island, and the lessons that Simon took from his father are crucial for how Simon behaves on this island,\u201d Thorne argues. \u201cWhat Jack is doing at this moment is going, \u2018I\u2019m here because I\u2019m not going to let myself down and I\u2019m going to pass this test.\u2019 What Simon does, ever so gently, is stick a needle into that, and the balloon slowly dissolves in front of Jack. \u2026 It allows us to have a whole new understanding of Jack.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJack\u2019s abstract, prideful story about his father allows Simon to guide them to a brutal reality: They\u2019re not about to be rescued. \u201cI knew that the scene had to get to the point of: \u2018Our fathers aren\u2019t coming,\u2019 \u201d Thorne says. \u201cIt had to get to the point of: \u2018I know your truth and my truth, and you may dress up all sorts of things to the other boys, but I\u2019ve sat with you crying at 8 years old when our fathers didn\u2019t come for us \u2014 and there is no way they\u2019re coming for us now.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

\n\tThe scene ends with Simon painting Jack\u2019s face, after he\u2019d initially walked in on him trying to do it himself \u2014 to great frustration. It\u2019s among the most intimate, warm scenes in the series, one that has sparked considerable speculation about its deeper meaning. \u201cI\u2019ve ended up talking to a lot of [viewers] about it, where they\u2019ve been searching for a meaning: \u2018Is it sexual? Is it this? Is it that?\u2019 What I do know is that they have enjoyed physical intimacy, by which I don\u2019t mean touching each other sexually \u2014 I mean hugging each other when they\u2019re upset or lying with each other when they\u2019re sick,\u201d Thorne says. \u201cBut I don\u2019t know what the sexuality of either of these boys is, and I don\u2019t know that they know at this moment what their sexuality is. They\u2019re not quite at that place yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
