\nSpencer Pratt, who for a brief dizzying moment went from reality-show afterthought to the potential next mayor of Los Angeles, is back to being the person from that reality show. <\/p>\n

The Associated Press late Monday afternoon officially called second place for his progressive rival Nithya Raman, after six days of the City Council member steadily gaining ground as more and more ballots were counted. A new batch of votes Monday took Raman\u2019s lead from 3,000 when the day started to more than 21,000 at its close. With just 8 percent, or 65,0000, of ballots outstanding, Raman\u2019s lead was deemed insurmountable, and the AP called it.<\/p>\n

Raman will now face incumbent mayor Karen Bass in a November runoff in a battle between two onetime Democratic allies who will argue over whether the city needs a steady moderate hand or a new progressive one to combat the many issues facing it.<\/p>\n

\n\tRaman posted to X and Instagram several hours after the election was called, saying she was \u201cincredibly honored that voters have given us the opportunity to advance to the general election for Mayor of Los Angeles\u201d and decrying a \u201cCity Hall [that] has prioritized giving political advantage to powerful interests that fund elections.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tAs of 9 p.m. PT Pratt had not conceded, and whether his reaction will ultimately be conciliatory or confrontational remained to be seen.<\/p>\n

\n\tAs Pratt stayed silent, a host of trolls on X questioned the results, while two of the more prominent\u00a0
right-wing social-media posters also suggested foul play.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeems more like a rigged election,\u201d said influencer and White House ally Laura Loomer.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot possible for Spencer Pratt to have lost the L.A. runoffs after the big lead he had,\u201d wrote president Donald Trump. There has been no evidence of any foul play in the primary election; Los Angeles vote-counting famously takes longer as signatures and ballots are examined by hand.<\/p>\n

The comments were low-risk for those figures, however, who both can play to their base and seed doubt for any future MAGA losses. Pratt has more to lose by making those allegations, and as the hours went on Monday night without him saying anything, he seemed pitched between doubling down on the establishment-questioning trollery that brought him here and taking a more restrained tack that could serve him well in a bid for cross-partisan legitimacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAs his campaign surged the spring, Pratt jolted the system by calling out Democratic complacency, tapping into anger among independents and even many Democrats about the city\u2019s handling of the 2025 wildfires and the homelessness crisis. But while he may have delivered a compelling message, his candidacy may have been done in\u00a0by the messenger\u00a0\u2014 a Republican-registered candidate in a liberal town \u2014 as many voters thought a fresh voice of a different kind was better-equipped to solve the challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Despite the early lead as Republican ballots came in, in the end the race may not prove to be especially close \u2014 a current difference of three points that could mushroom to four or five by the time the final tally is in. Raman (currently 28.5 percent of the vote and rising) would well end up closer to Bass (34.3 percent) above her than Pratt (25.8 percent) below her.<\/p>\n

Still, Pratt\u2019s ability to garner more than 200,000 votes even as someone who had never run for office before highlighted the high levels of discontent and may have opened the door to other outsider candidates in the future who can better marshal that disgust.<\/p>\n

Pratt \u2014 who was so sure of a matchup with Bass on Election Night he told reporters \u201cshe knows it\u2019s on\u201d \u2014 will likely use his newfound fame to continue his gadfly ways, though whether that\u2019s as cable-news and social-media commentator or another office in a future election remains to be seen.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Raman was seen as an upstart when she entered the race at the 11th-hour to challenge Bass, and for a while it seemed like her splitting the Democratic vote with Bass would prevent the incumbent from reaching 50 percent and open a lane for Pratt to take her on. She also faced a challenge on her left flank from Rae Huang, a Democratic Socialist of America candidate with a host of public-spending proposals (including free city-run movie theaters), who some experts projected would cut into Raman\u2019s total.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Raman\u2019s instincts proved correct as she defied all the negative predictions. She\u2019ll now seek to do it again against the favored Bass.<\/p>\n
