\n\tFor Rich Lerner, Golf\u2019s Longest Day(\u2122) began at 8 a.m. The Golf Channel\u2018s lead studio host won\u2019t be home until after midnight, when Lerner still plans to eat a \u201cfull dinner,\u201d he told The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>. Lerner, like his colleagues and viewers, has just as big an appetite for qualifying golf, and today, the \u201copen\u201d spirit of golf\u2019s U.S. Open provides.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe morning began with Lerner\u2019s \u201cfeet up, BS-ing\u201d with fellow on-air talent and producers, he says \u2014 the \u201ccoffee is flowing.\u201d But soon it is time to tee off on 10 hours of exclusive live coverage of final U.S. Open qualifiers from 10 separate sites, from Purchase, New York to York, Ontario. (Yes, you can qualify for the United States Open in Canada.) <\/p>\n

\n\tFrom his climate-controlled spot in the Stamford, Connecticut studio, Lerner will quarterback the action, passing off to 11 separate reporters in the field. If that seems like a forced cross-sport analogy, blame Lerner. Today is the NFL Draft for golf, he said, both in terms of witnessing amateurs become pros and the behind-the-scenes scrambling by dozens of Lerner\u2019s colleagues in HQ\u2019s war room. (The Versant-owned channel\u2019s coordinating producer Matt Hegarty is head coach here.)<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is one that we really look forward to, because this is one is part of our DNA,\u201d Lerner says while on a writing break. \u201cThis one says we are all about the sport of golf and nothing else in a way that no other day does.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGolf\u2019s Longest Day\u201d is \u201cone of the singular Golf Channel days of the year,\u201d he adds. It is undoubtedly, as the name suggests, its longest. But it is not the hardest \u2014 those would be the Masters, the U.S. Open itself, or even the Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOddly, it doesn\u2019t play as being grueling, for whatever reason,\u201d Lerner said from the midpoint in his Monday. \u201cIt\u2019s just a ton of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAs I write this, some 650 golfers \u2014 some you\u2019ve heard of and others you never will \u2014 battle for one of the remaining few spots at the U.S. Open, the annual major championship tournament that appropriately ends on Father\u2019s Day Sunday. But today, weeks prior to the real tournament, PGA Tour pros and former major championship winners (including former U.S. Open winners) are attempting to fend off UPS drivers for a June 18 tee time at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton New York. (Well, one<\/em> UPS driver: Nick Barrett, currently competing in Rockville, Maryland.)<\/p>\n

\n\tThe democratic nature of the Open is as \u201cpure\u201d as sports get, Lerner says. \u201cYour station in life, your bank account \u2014 none of that matters. And that is, I think, what is so beautiful about about the game and this particular championship.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tToday is \u201cnot about a rating,\u201d Lerner says. It\u2019s about a different kind of sporting event.<\/p>\n

\n\tUsually, sports fans \u201ctune in to see the big star,\u201d Lerner says. Not today. \u201cOn this day, I think most golf fans tune in to see someone they have never heard of. Hopefully by 10 o\u2019clock at night, you\u2019ll be so invested in that person\u2019s story that you can\u2019t turn away. That\u2019s real drama.\u201d<\/p>\n
