Her last two features, <em>In Safe Hands<\/em> and <em>All Your Faces, <\/em>were both ensemble pieces featuring star-studded casts doing solid work across the board, in films that favored characters and emotions over plot.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=137\">\u2018Shogun\u2019 Star Tadanobu Asano Returns to Cannes in Yukiko Sode\u2019s Arresting Romance \u2018All the Lovers in the Night\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThat approach yields another memorable turn in <em>Another Day<\/em> (<em>Garance<\/em>), which stars Ad\u00e8le Exarchopoulos as a functioning alcoholic who\u2019s also a working actress \u2014 or at least an actress looking for work when she\u2019s not too plastered. Already crowned with a C\u00e9sar award for <em>All Your Faces<\/em>, as well as a Palme d\u2019Or for her role in Abdellatif Kechiche\u2019s <em>Blue Is the Warmest Color<\/em>, the 32-year-old French talent winningly portrays a woman who can\u2019t kick a habit that may prematurely send her to the grave. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\tAnother Day\t\t<\/p>\n<\/h3>\n<div>\n<span>The Bottom Line<\/span><br \/>\n<span><\/p>\n<p>\tA top-notch performance in a wavering drama.<br \/>\n\t<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<strong>Venue:<\/strong> Cannes Film Festival (Competition)<br \/><strong>Cast:<\/strong> Ad\u00e8le Exarchopoulos, Sara Giraudeau, Sarajeanne Drillaud, Anne Suarez, Mathilde Roehrich, Brigitte Sy, H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Alexandridis<br \/><strong>Director, screenwriter:<\/strong> Jeanne Herry<br \/>\n<span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2 hours\t\t\t<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\n\tBut there\u2019s also a limit to Herry\u2019s latest performance piece, which feels too sketchy and loose-limbed to sustain our attention, or else relies too much on histrionics to do so. More chronicle than drama, it sticks faithfully by the side of its lovable mess of a heroine, whom Exarchopoulos plays with her usual no-bullshit funkiness, this time with too many glasses of wine down the hatch. She brings a dose of humor and a few grace notes to a movie in search of a tighter story, even if it deserves credit for its honesty.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tCassavetes immediately comes to mind at the start of <em>Another Day<\/em>, which channels some of the unhinged energy of the director\u2019s masterworks about alcoholism and acting, <em>A Woman Under the Influence<\/em> and <em>Opening Night<\/em>. In some ways, Herry\u2019s feature is an attempt to combine the two, capturing its titular heroine\u2019s dual plight as both an out-of-control drinker and a gifted performer who loves the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBut it\u2019s tough to make it as an actress \u2014 \u201chard hard hard!\u201d a teary-eyed Garance confesses to a class of grade schoolers in one funny scene \u2014 especially when you start slurring your lines or showing up late to rehearsal. This happens at increasing intervals as we watch Garance trying to hang on with bit parts in artsy plays or leading roles in a roaming kids\u2019 theatre, giving her all but also slipping up whenever she\u2019s too hungover.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHer fellow thespians eventually confront her about the drinking, but Garance doesn\u2019t want to hear it. Any good actor will tell you it\u2019s not easy to convincingly play a drunk person, but Exarchopoulos not only does that extremely well here \u2014 she plays one who keeps claiming being drunk isn\u2019t a problem, even if deep down her character knows it is.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=135\">A24 Wins Bidding War for \u2018Club Kid\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe film focuses on Garance\u2019s mixed bag of emotions as she wards off her inner demons by being inebriated most of the time. She survives a few failed love affairs, one with a shiftless film director who spends his days glued to their couch, the other with a lesbian writer (Sarajeanne Drillaud) who opens her up sexually in a relationship that\u2019s both passionate and short-lived. She also maintains steady friendships that mostly involve going out to clubs and binge-drinking to oblivion.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tGarance is too much of a party girl to ever settle down, getting so sauced that she barely makes it home each night in one piece \u2014 and never with her stockings intact. That routine changes, though not completely, when she meets Pauline (Sara Giraudeau of <em>The Bureau<\/em>), a wholesome theater scenographer who\u2019s every bit her opposite but is also willing to put up with her antics. Much of the film\u2019s second half tracks their burgeoning romance through thick and thin, including the COVID lockdown and many more hangovers, until Garance nearly gets wasted to the point of no return.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe story of a functioning alcoholic is perhaps repetitive by nature \u2014 another day, another two liters of white wine in this case \u2014 but that doesn\u2019t always make it interesting to watch. To reinforce the drama, Herry adds a weepy subplot involving Garance\u2019s younger sister, Charlotte (Mathilde Roehrich), a breast cancer survivor who tragically gets diagnosed with leukemia before giving birth to her second child.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIt feels like overkill, whereas the best scenes in <em>Another Day<\/em> are the ones that come across as messy and real \u2014 a blend that is more or less Exarchopoulos\u2019 specialty. (See her marvelous portrait of a frenzied flight attendant in <em>Zero F***s Given<\/em>.) Herry tries too hard to stir us at times, even if she manages to undercut the drama with some genuine laughs. But her film teeters uneasily between a wavering narrative and belabored stabs at melodrama, never quite finding its footing.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThat doesn\u2019t mean <em>Another Day<\/em> isn\u2019t occasionally moving, especially during a closing section that has Garance finally cleaning up her act with the help of a straight-talking addictologist (H\u00e9l\u00e8ne Alexandridis). At that point her appearance begins to shift and the hardened look Exarchopoulos has worn throughout most of the movie starts to melt away, albeit with a little more suffering to come.
