{"id":1268,"date":"2026-06-05T16:07:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T16:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1268"},"modified":"2026-06-05T16:07:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T16:07:11","slug":"bojack-creator-on-his-new-netflix-show-no-talking-animals-lots-of-kvetching-humans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1268","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Bojack\u2019 Creator on His New Netflix Show: No Talking Animals, Lots of Kvetching Humans"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<!-- do not apply CSS styles to this element! --><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\n\tIn Raphael Bob-Waksberg\u2019s eyes, creatives have only just scratched the surface of what types of stories can be told in the animated television space.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1266\">Box Office: \u2018Scary Movie\u2019 Earns $7.7M, \u2018Masters\u2019 Summons $4.4M<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs the creator of the adult tragicomedy <em>BoJack Horseman<\/em>, Bob-Waksberg\u2019s no stranger to subverting expectations when it comes to animation and humor. Since the critically acclaimed show ended in 2020, the writer and comedian has experienced some major life changes \u2014 chief among them becoming a father of two \u2014 that, at least partly, influenced his latest Netflix offering, <em>Long Story Short<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI find myself thinking about family a lot more than I was when I was making <em>BoJack Horseman <\/em>and thinking a lot about what I received from my parents and what I want to pass on to my children \u2014 what do I feel like I can\u2019t help but pass on to my children?\u201d Bob-Waksberg tells <em>THR<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tRather than simply opine, the showrunner opted to make \u201csomething productive\u201d of his ponderings, infusing them into the series, which centers on a middle-class Jewish family: the Schwooper siblings and their parents, social worker Naomi Schwartz (voiced by Lisa Edelstein) and math professor Elliot Cooper (Paul Reiser), who combined their last names to create the children\u2019s unique surname. Ben Feldman voices the eldest son, Avi; Abbi Jacobson plays the middle child, Shira; and Max Greenfield is the voice of the youngest of the bunch, Yoshi.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cI\u2019m never aware of just how personal I\u2019m being with any of my writing, so I have no idea what this says about me specifically or personally,\u201d says Bob-Waksberg, \u201cbut I was very much interested in a long history of family and what it does to a person.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn a way that a live-action series wouldn\u2019t be able to, <em>Long Story Short <\/em>employs nonlinear storytelling to explore the way a family\u2019s relationship changes over time \u2014 the use of animation eliminating any potential issues with continuity. \u201cWe could be very specific with our visuals and have characters age and de-age without having to worry about whether prosthetics look fake,\u201d explains Bob-Waksberg. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to have a home base that we\u2019re flashing back or flashing forward from. It feels more like the characters are just the characters. They\u2019re not an actor aging themselves up or aging themselves down.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAs such, the show covers several different eras in each episode \u2014 often the \u201990s, 2010s and 2020s \u2014 even going as far back as the 1950s to uncover overbearing matriarch Naomi\u2019s self-centered origins as a child. In addition to visual freedom, jumping through time allowed the writers to tackle weightier topics like grief, for example. In episode four, \u201cShira Can\u2019t Cook,\u201d the Schwoopers\u2019 daughter attempts to make knishes like her mom used to for a school potluck, her struggle in the kitchen exemplifying a deep-seated, ongoing need to gain her mother\u2019s approval even after her death in 2020 from COVID-19 \u2014 something Shira resented when Naomi was alive.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cPart of [exploring the long history of a family] is also the shared trauma \u2014 and the trauma from multiple perspectives \u2014 of what being in this family has done to you,\u201d says Bob-Waksberg.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/uspropertymoves.com\/?p=1264\">Thomas Doherty Finally Had His Pinch-Me Moment With \u2018Paradise\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\tStill, comedy remains at the forefront of the 25-minute episodes, like in \u201cThe Intervention,\u201d when Yoshi\u2019s family confronts him about his secretive behavior, believing he\u2019s addicted to drugs when in reality he\u2019s hiding his conversion to Orthodox Judaism from his conservative Jewish family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u201cIt was very important to me that the show makes sense all the way through, that we\u2019re not building a mystery puzzle box show or putting in little clues that you wouldn\u2019t really understand until you got to the end,\u201d Bob-Waksberg explains of his approach. \u201cI find, especially in comedy, it can be very frustrating if you feel like you\u2019re only getting half the joke or you\u2019re getting a punchline that\u2019s not going to be funny until you hear the setup five episodes later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\u00a0The writers were especially careful when it came to any references to aspects of Jewish identity and customs, making sure the jokes would pay off for the average viewer \u201ceven if you don\u2019t know some of the words that are being said because a bunch of it\u2019s cultural, it\u2019s Jewish or it\u2019s Yiddish and it\u2019s never explained,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>Long Story Short<\/em>\u2019s specific narrative lens aside, Bob-Waksberg, who also co-created the animated Amazon Prime Video psychological series <em>Undone <\/em>with Kate Purdy and was an executive producer and writer on the Netflix\/Adult Swim animated sitcom <em>Tuca &amp; Bertie<\/em>, says, \u201cI don\u2019t consider the stuff I do to be niche or cult or inaccessible.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn fact, when he thinks back to watching episodes of <em>The\u202fSimpsons<\/em> that referenced classic films like <em>Citizen Kane<\/em>, <em>The Godfather<\/em> and other pop culture moments he wasn\u2019t fully aware of at a young age, Bob-Waksberg says a certain level of unawareness with a show\u2019s subject matter only enhances engagement. \u201cIt made me want to look into those things and learn more about it. I felt more cultured by watching it,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s something kind of nice about being a little kid and sitting on the stairwell and hearing the grown-up party.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\n<em>This story appeared in the June 3 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
