He\u2019s\u00a0really just\u00a0a fanboy at heart.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHe was going through all the\u00a0emotions\u00a0during\u00a0his latest project, taking on the role of Link in season two of Hulu\u2019s post-apocalyptic political thriller\u00a0Paradise<\/em>. It was not only a new challenge for him as an\u00a0actor,\u00a0but he also got to cross a few things off his bucket list, like working with some acting greats.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey always say, \u2018Never meet your idols,\u2019 but she\u2019s near and dear to my heart,\u201d Doherty says of his co-star Shailene Woodley,\u00a0before\u00a0continuing\u00a0his praise of the show\u2019s mainstays, Sterling K.\u00a0Brown\u00a0and Julianne Nicholson.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBut before Doherty got fully\u00a0lost in all his enthusiastic compliments\u00a0of\u00a0his co-stars\u00a0while chatting with\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter\u00a0<\/em>over Zoom on\u00a0a Monday\u00a0morning\u00a0in late April, he quickly caught himself.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0annoying because you watch interviews and you watch people in shows and\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0like, \u2018Yeah, we\u2019re like a family.\u2019\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0like, \u2018Fucking bullshit. No way.\u00a0You guys\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0even like each\u00a0other,\u2019\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0says.\u00a0But now he understands\u00a0where those people\u00a0are coming from, as he \u201ccan\u2019t stop talking about how amazing these people are and how amazing the show is,\u201d he adds with a wide grin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore Doherty scored his pinch-me moment on\u00a0Paradise<\/em>, he was already\u00a0making\u00a0a name for himself, first with his breakout roles in Disney\u2019s The Lodge <\/em>and the\u00a0Descendants<\/em>\u00a0franchise, and later with his charming yet intense roles in\u00a0the\u00a0Gossip Girl\u00a0<\/em>reboot and the second season of\u00a0Tell Me Lies<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBut taking on the role of Link, a rugged yet kind member of a group of survivors known as the Cancer Cowboys, was a whole new challenge. He also underwent a physical transformation at the beginning of the season, with wild hair and a scruffy beard rendering him nearly unrecognizable \u2014 even to himself at times.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAfter 10 hours on set, you forget that you look like this scary person and then you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror,\u201d Doherty says with a laugh. \u201cJust being on the sets as well. The Graceland set is on Melrose Avenue in a soundstage, but you go in for so long you think that you\u2019re there, and then you come out and you\u2019re in L.A. and it\u2019s sunny and you\u2019re like, \u2018What the fuck\u2019s going on?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBelow, Doherty unpacks stepping into Paradise<\/em>, why you shouldn\u2019t ask him about quantum physics and what\u2019s next for his character in season three. He also shares his career goals and his reaction to the success he\u2019s seen post Disney.<\/p>\n

\n\t***<\/p>\n

\nWhat was it like to step into the world of Paradise<\/em> for season two, especially after the show had such a successful first season,\u00a0and join an iconic cast led by Sterling K. Brown and Julianne Nicholson?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIt definitely was the kind of next step in my career in terms of scale, but also, like you\u2019re saying, the plethora of actors I was working with, I\u2019d never been surrounded by that before. I\u2019m such a huge fan of Shailene [Woodley] for so many years, so just the opportunity to work with her was [something you] jump at it. They always say, \u201cNever meet your idols,\u201d but she\u2019s near and dear to my heart. She\u2019s just a beautiful, beautiful human being.<\/p>\n

\n\tWe had this amazing opportunity \u2014\u00a0me and Shailene and the other Cancer Cowboys \u2014 where we were joining this very well-established production. We were truly the new kids on the block. The first episode really gave us an opportunity to acclimatize to the culture and find our footing, so that when it picked up again in episode two and the All Stars came and joined us, we were settled in a lot more. Julianne as well, what an amazing moment. I think Julianne is the coolest person I\u2019ve ever met. I\u2019ve met some cool people. I live in New York City. I\u2019m in Hollywood and she takes a biscuit, for sure. Then you have Sterling, a leader who practices what he preaches and is very inspiring to a younger actor like myself.<\/p>\n

\n(Laughs<\/em>.) I mean, if I worked with really cool people like Sterling and Julianne, I\u2019d also want to just sit and talk about them, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tHonestly, it\u2019s annoying because you watch interviews and you people in shows and they\u2019re like, \u201cYeah, we\u2019re like a family.\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cFucking bullshit. No way. You guys don\u2019t even like each other.\u201d (Laughs<\/em>.) And I can\u2019t stop talking about how amazing these people are and how amazing the show is. With season three, I can\u2019t stop telling people, \u201cIt\u2019s going to be bigger and better,\u201d but it really is. It\u2019s so good. I can\u2019t believe what Dan [Fogelman, creator] and his team are coming up with.<\/p>\n

\nI have to admit, I didn\u2019t recognize you initially in season two. What was that physical transformation at the beginning like for you? Did it help you embody Link?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tAll these tiny things that these two artists [Zoe and Michael] came up with \u2014 the beard \u2014 and then you\u2019re working with Coxy, head of the costume department, and he just really collaborates with you and lets you feel like you\u2019re Link, like you\u2019re in this post-apocalyptic world. I can\u2019t take any credit for any of that, but it definitely helps. That\u2019s Dan. He doesn\u2019t leave anything to the imagination for the audience, but also for his actors.<\/p>\n

\n\tI\u2019m looking in the mirror fucking getting afraid because after 10 hours on set, you forget that you look like this scary person, and then you catch a glimpse of yourself. So it\u2019s not just that for the audience, it\u2019s also like that for me. I\u2019m like, \u201cOh God, yeah, Thomas. Your name is Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nThe quantum physics stuff\u00a0with Alex\u00a0in season two\u00a0definitely\u00a0had\u00a0viewers\u2019 heads spinning. As one of the actors having to make sense of that in the show, what did those conversations look\u00a0like with\u00a0Dan Fogelman? Do you have a full understanding of it now?<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n

\n\tDon\u2019t ask me about that. I don\u2019t know. (Laughs<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

\nI swear I wasn\u2019t going to ask you to define quantum physics or anything.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tI used to love it before the finale came out because everyone would ask these questions and I\u2019d always go, \u201cI can\u2019t tell you.\u201d Little did they know, I can\u2019t tell you because I don\u2019t know. (Laughs<\/em>.) All I could do was understand the most basic, basic, rudimentary idea, not even the understanding of it, just the idea of it that you could probably explain to a 10 year old. As long as I had that, you trust the writing. Because I did try to understand it and it\u2019s really intense. You start to get in your head with it and that starts to impede your acting and your connection with it. It was Julianne who really helped me with that because I was stressing out. I was like, \u201cI\u2019m what?\u201d She was like, \u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d We would laugh in the green room. She was like, \u201cIt\u2019s best just to not get lost in your head with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nAt the end of the season (spoiler alert!<\/em>), Link learns so much in such a short amount of time, including Sinatra thinking he\u2019s her\u00a0dead son, Dylan;\u00a0that Annie\u00a0died and discovering\u00a0he has a child; all while trying to get out of the bunker. Were you ever nervous about being able to process all those\u00a0different\u00a0emotions\u00a0authentically\u00a0on screen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tNo, not really because when he finds out all of this stuff, he finds out in the space of 10 seconds in a very, very high-pressure life-or-death situation. It actually might be his mom. He just lost his best friend, Geiger. He\u2019s got a baby and Annie\u2019s dead. You can\u2019t process that. So it\u2019s like that level of confusion and that\u2019s kind of it.<\/p>\n

\n\tThen in season three, that\u2019s when we start to see the processing happen. So we never really see Link properly process it. I mean, we\u2019ve all received bad news at one time in our life, and you feel this kind of numbness, this kind of, \u201cWhat?\u201d And then he gets hit four times and he\u2019s about to die. So it wasn\u2019t actually too intense. It\u2019s quite easy to personalize that information.<\/p>\n

\nWhen you reflect on season two and the heavy themes woven into the storyline, from AI and humanity to global devastation and government corruption, what did you take away from it?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tThe idea that no matter how awful the world may seem, the powers that be, how awful they may be, we always have a choice. They can take away things, they can manipulate certain ideas and all the rest of it, but they can\u2019t take away your choice. And it\u2019s scary the world we\u2019re in right now with all this AI stuff and certain leaders and wars, but they can\u2019t disconnect you from your heart, where your real humanity exists, not in your brain; your real morality and humanity exists in your heart. That\u2019s what I really love about this season. I love Xavier\u2019s (Brown) character for that.<\/p>\n

\nAs you look to season three, what can you share about Link\u2019s future? Do you have personal\u00a0hopes\u00a0for your character?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tI know everything. I\u2019m not going to tell you any of it. (Laughs<\/em>.) I can\u2019t tell you anything. Are you joking? You know, I can\u2019t tell you. (Laughs<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s going to be bigger. I don\u2019t know how they\u2019ve done it. I was kind of apprehensive about coming into [season] three because I didn\u2019t know \u2026 I don\u2019t have the writer\u2019s brain like them. I don\u2019t have that level of talent that these writers have and that Dan has, and he\u2019s done it. It\u2019s going to be bigger and better.<\/p>\n

\nIt\u2019s been several years since your breakout roles on Disney. Having found so much success after on other shows, outside of Disney, do you ever find yourself reflecting on the early career days?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tI am proud of myself, but it is so much luck. So much fortune. It\u2019s so much work behind the scenes that I\u2019m not even necessarily privy to. I get to pull up and do what I love to do, but it\u2019s all been facilitated by this amazing team I have. My mom and dad have facilitated a life and opportunities for me that they never had. They grew up in poverty and working-class Scotland. So the takeaway isn\u2019t necessarily pride. It\u2019s definitely gratitude. Who knows? I might never work again or I might continue to work. I\u2019m 31 and the ego\u2019s starting to quiet down a little bit and it\u2019s a really beautiful experience to render to God or to the universe or whatever your belief is.<\/p>\n

\nDo you have a dream genre or role you hope to take on in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tI love playing characters. I want to be the villain. I want to be a James Bond villain. I really, really want to do a rom-com. I did Girls5eva<\/em>. That was my first experience of comedy and I had the best time. But then I\u2019m also helping my friend, Eli Brown; he\u2019s written this amazing script that we want to do together. I\u2019m excited to do that. I love musicals as well. I\u2019d love to do a La La Land<\/em>-esque kind of [film]. I actually have Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone tattooed on my arm. Honestly, I\u2019m so open. I\u2019m so open as long as the writing is good and the people involved are good people; sign me up.<\/p>\n

\nYou also worked with Eric Dane on\u00a0Family Secrets<\/em>,\u00a0which will be one of his final onscreen roles once it\u2019s released. What was it like getting to work with him before his death?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tI was in a bit of an odd place in my life, quite a difficult time for me. And Eric, not really knowing me, saw that. And I went to dinner with him a few times and he was hugely instrumental in getting me from a certain place in my life to where I am now. I\u2019m not going to pretend that we were like best guys or whatever, but we were in Serbia shooting this movie and he would take me for dinner and talk to me and stuff, and it was really incredibly impactful on where I am now. And he was kind of the first person that started me on this journey to get me to a happier, more content place in my life. And I\u2019ll forever be grateful for that. And he\u2019s really funny as well. It\u2019s a real heartbreak.<\/p>\n

\nWhen\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0not filming or working, what does your perfect day off look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tNo alarm. I\u2019ll wake up about eight, nine. Drink my water, have my coffee, play with my dog, and try to just properly rest. I don\u2019t mean sit and vegetate on a sofa and scroll on my phone and watch TV. Just really rest and try to still myself. I\u2019ve got some of the most amazing friends, most incredible people I\u2019m so fortunate to have in my life. Connect with them, connect with the family back home, check in. Because when you\u2019re working and pretending the world\u2019s ending and someone\u2019s holding a gun to your head, it\u2019s quite a lot. So it\u2019s good to just check in and reground with these amazing people. I\u2019m honestly kind of boring. I love grocery shopping. (Laughs<\/em>.) I love <\/em>Home Depot!<\/p>\n

\n\tNow I\u2019m in L.A., so going to the beach, going for hikes, being outside. Like you were saying prior with AI and the state of the world, I\u2019m like, \u201cOh my God, did you see this picture of this person? I can\u2019t believe they did that.\u201d And everyone\u2019s like, \u201cThomas, that\u2019s AI.\u201d So I can\u2019t trust myself on this thing, so I try and stay away from social media. I like to reconnect with myself and with nature.<\/p>\n

\nIf you had to describe\u00a0what makes\u00a0Thomas Doherty,\u00a0Thomas Doherty, what would you say?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\tI don\u2019t think I could answer that. I do regard myself as quite a loyal person to the people I love: my friends and family. I like that part about myself. I\u2019m in this nice learning time in my life where I want to be an honorable person. So maybe it doesn\u2019t make me who I am, but that\u2019s definitely what I strive to be. To have honor and hold myself to a standard and not have who I am determined by external things.<\/p>\n
