\n\tClaire Foy never saw Sugapuff coming.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tHow could she have? The British actress \u2014 who won an Emmy for her brilliantly contained and internal portrayal of young Queen Elizabeth II sublimating her every desire and dream for her duty in The Crown Season 2 \u2014 was finishing up the Q&A after her late Thursday keynote talk at\u00a0 SXSW London when an ebullient man in the audience cried out for the microphone.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m here!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFoy, who\u2019d been a delightful sport all night, brimming with laughter and self-deprecating British humor, gestured for the usher bearing the mic to hand it over.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYeah?\u201d she asked, smiling expectantly.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cClaire Foy, it\u2019s so beautiful to see your natural self and not acting,\u201d said the man, who I\u2019d later learn is Sugapuff, a pop culture presenter from East London. \u201cYou have such a beautiful soul and I really like your vibe.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFoy let out a cackle, or more like a \u201ccaw-caw!\u201d sound of surprise and amazement that has rarely, if ever, been emitted from a human \u2014 more like a crow who\u2019s just found a trove of garbage to munch on and wants to broadcast it to the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is what I mean, your beauty is just confusing me at this point!\u201d said Sugapuff, who wore his name on a rhinestone grill around his neck and was simultaneously filming while firing out seemingly whatever question he could think of to keep the interaction going.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSo, what are the everyday things that you still do, like now that you\u2019re a superstar?\u201d he said, also throwing in a compliment about the two giant, dangling rhinestone brooches affixed to her tuxedo jacket and calling her \u201ca very stylish woman.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFoy, a pro, endeavored to keep up, responding to the compliments, and saying she does all the things that ordinary people do, just before Sugapuff threw out another query, about what her guilty pleasures are and what she likes to buy in \u201cthe cheaper part of things,\u201d like Tesco supermarkets.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know what goes on there and I don\u2019t shop there anymore,\u201d said Foy with a wink. (She used to be a Tesco cashier.)<\/p>\n

\n\tAn usher had crouched down next to Sugapuff gently hinting it was time to hand over the mic, but Sugapuff was not done. He wanted to know her favorite packed lunch on set.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFoy never once made it seem like she couldn\u2019t handle the barrage. \u201cI have so many snacks. I eat only 100 percent dark chocolate, which most people find really gross,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNo, you need to be healthy!\u201d said Sugapuff, as if they were the only people in this makeshift lecture hall inside a church. Foy agreed that she needs to be healthy. \u201cYou look good!\u201d Sugapuff continued. \u201cAnd it\u2019s so worth it, because your skin is TEA!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFoy demurred that she had tons of makeup on and changed the subject, recommending that everyone get into gardening. And then maybe she got a little too into talking about gardening, explaining that she started using MiracleGrow, as Sugapuff peppered her with more questions about her summer plans.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNobody cares about this!\u201d said Foy, dissolving in laughter. \u201cI\u2019m feeding my plants for the first time ever and it makes me feel like an adult, I think. And I talk to them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBy this point, the usher was practically trying to wrestle the mic away, as moderator Clarisse Loughrey, film critic for The Independent<\/em>, simultaneously tried to end the talk \u2014 but Sugapuff would not be deterred.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWell, Claire Foy, my name is Sugapuff, and I\u2019m adding love to pop culture because a lot of entertainers are depressed and I believe it\u2019s time that we show artists like you love and we see your personality, because you are a true star, Claire Foy!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe laughed again, amazed \u2014 probably thinking it was over.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBut it was not!\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnd before I go, I\u2019m going to sing something for you because I must go. I\u2019m getting late!\u201d Sugapuff announced.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFoy\u2019s jaw dropped in disbelief, but she just went with it.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNever mind, I\u2019ll find someone like you,\u201d Sugapuff began, sort of in tune to the Adele hit \u201cSomeone Like You\u201d and at such a surprisingly loud volume that Foy, like the rest of the audience, practically fell out of her chair laughing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI wish nothing but the best, for youuuuuuuu, toooooooo!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFoy clapped and swayed as Sugapuff made his way down the aisle toward the stage, as the security guards and ushers who\u2019d been standing on the outskirts of the room suddenly sprang into action. \u201c\u2018Don\u2019t forget me!\u2019 I beg \/ I remember you said\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAll he wanted to do was to get Foy to join in the duet, which she did because, well, when at SXSW London, right?\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSometimes I laugh and sometimes I \u2026. Something else instead?\u201d the Emmy-winner sang with some timidity, artfully allowing the moment to wind down.<\/p>\n

And just as suddenly \u2014 or maybe it was because the guards and ushers were about to pounce \u2014 Sugapuff declared that he had to run and get his Uber, racing down the aisle and out of the church. (The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> later confirmed that SXSW got the microphone back, and that Sugapuff was telling the truth \u2014\u00a0within minutes, he had jumped into an Uber.) \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWith AI taking over and less humanism being encouraged, I believe it important to see the personalities and celebrate stars for who they are and how they are,\u201d Sugapuff later told THR<\/em> by email. \u201cI\u2019m disappointed by the amount of Film PRs in the UK [who] are anti-fun!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThroughout her talk, though, Foy had proven herself the opposite of anti-fun, often getting huge laughs from the audience.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe\u2019s here at SXSW London to premiere Savage House<\/em>, an 18th century dark satire co-starring Richard E. Grant about a family of social climbers. Comedy is more scary than drama, she said, because you have no idea if anyone\u2019s going to find it funny until they watch it. \u201cSo, It\u2019s made me feel a bit more vulnerable, actually, weirdly, doing things that are supposed to be funny, because what if they\u2019re\u2026 not?!\u201d she said, to big laughs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tShe also gamely talked about The Crown<\/em>, which will celebrate its tenth anniversary next year. What did Foy think defined Queen Elizabeth II? The actress pointed to her \u201csimplicity,\u201d adding, \u201cI don\u2019t think she was a very complicated woman. I think she had an incredibly complicated existence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMeaning? \u201cI think that she wasn\u2019t expecting to be queen, and when she became queen, it coincided with the fact that her father died,\u201d said Foy. \u201cThat does something to someone, when you have that sort of bereavement and then the biggest responsibility you could ever possibly imagine.\u201d If young Elizabeth had her way, she would have spent all her time outdoors with her dogs and horses.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cStephen Daldry once said something about the fact that she was an ordinary woman who became extraordinary because of all the ideas that people projected onto her,\u201d said Foy. The most important thing, she added, was to never lose sight of the queen as being \u201cordinary.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe talk covered her entire career, including All of Us Strangers<\/em>, the ghost story starring Andrew Scott. \u201cOf all things I\u2019d done, that\u2019s the thing that moves people the most,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd she revealed a bit of news about Danny Boyle\u2019s upcoming Ink<\/em>, a feature about the rise of the Murdoch empire, starring Guy Pearce as Rupert and Jack O\u2019Connell as Larry Lamb, the editor he tapped in the late \u201860s and early \u201870s to revamp The Sun<\/em> and turn it into a tabloid.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tFoy plays Jules, a composite character written for the movie \u201cbecause there were no women!\u201d Foy joked, then corrected herself.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNo, women existed in 1969, but they just didn\u2019t have very powerful jobs,\u201d she said. The actress said she read tons of books about female journalists who didn\u2019t get recognition, but who \u201cfought their way into the kind of boys\u2019 club that was the newspaper business.\u201d The film, she added, \u201cwould have suffered if it didn\u2019t have a sort of homage to those women and a representation of the significance of that impact on Fleet Street on the news that we can see today.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd soon after that, she was fielding a question about her sky-high Louboutin platform boots, which, it\u2019s true, were impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe red-soled boots had been provided by her stylist. \u201cI\u2019m too short for all clothes. This isn\u2019t necessarily a choice; it\u2019s more of a need,\u201d Foy said, laughing. \u201cThe trousers might look good if I have longer legs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Would she be able to walk off the stage in them? Foy said it would be anyone\u2019s guess. But as soon as she sang her duet with Sugapuff, she was on her feet and practically sprinting back to her car. <\/p>\n
