\n\tThe most audacious media spectacle in recent memory was hatched on the floor of Madison Square Garden, less than two weeks after the 2024 presidential election.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Nov. 16, 2024, President-elect Donald\u00a0Trump walked into\u00a0New York\u2019s most famous arena\u00a0to loud applause\u00a0from a friendly crowd, as Kid Rock\u2019s \u201cAmerican Bad Ass\u201d played.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTrump\u00a0was there for UFC 309, and he\u00a0was joined by Rock,\u00a0Elon Musk, and incoming cabinet secretaries Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard, among other dignitaries. But\u00a0when\u00a0he walked out, he did so\u00a0alongside\u00a0Dana White, the\u00a0CEO\u00a0of UFC.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAmid the fights, Trump took a moment to\u00a0make a suggestion\u00a0to White, a longtime\u00a0personal friend\u00a0dating back to the early days of UFC.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe leaned over to me and says, \u2018we should do a fight at the White House,\u2019\u201d White recalls in an interview with\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cI said\u00a0\u2018yes, we should.\u2019 I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know what\u00a0he\u00a0meant \u2026\u00a0I was thinking\u00a0maybe there\u2019s\u00a0some room that\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0thinking about where\u00a0we\u2019d\u00a0have it.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0like,\u00a0\u2018no, we\u2019re\u00a0gonna\u00a0do it outside on the South Lawn.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen [White] initially mentioned the idea of\u00a0putting on\u00a0a UFC event on the South Lawn of the White House, I truly did not believe him. I thought he was kidding,\u201d says Craig Borsari, the chief content officer of the UFC.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe\u2019s\u00a0funny, but\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0not a joke around kind of guy,\u201d White says of Trump. \u201cLiterally, when\u00a0he says something, consider it done.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd so that offhand suggestion\u00a0will become a reality on June 14, when\u00a0the MMA promotion\u00a0hosts UFC Freedom 250 in a custom-built arena on the South Lawn of the White House, a made-for TV (or at least streaming) event, the likes of which has never been seen before, and probably never will be again.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tA series of literal cage matches,\u00a0set in front of one of the most famous buildings in the world, in front of an audience expected to include some of the most powerful people on earth, including political leaders, celebrities and global CEOs,\u00a0with UFC parent company TKO Group Holdings\u00a0(led by CEO Ari Emanuel)\u00a0betting on \u201cSuper Bowl-level\u201d media exposure, and a defining moment for the company\u2019s nascent\u00a0$7.7 billion\u00a0deal with\u00a0Paramount\u00a0Skydance\u00a0(led by CEO David Ellison).\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis will be one of the greatest and most historic sports events in history, and President Trump hosting it at the White House is a testament to his vision to celebrate America\u2019s monumental 250th anniversary,\u201d says White House\u00a0spokesman\u00a0Davis Ingle.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe UFC Freedom 250 event is nonetheless a gambit for everyone involved\u00a0given its high-profile, and a costly bet by TKO, which is covering all the costs, from building the temporary arena and hospitality\u00a0structures\u00a0to replacing\u00a0the\u00a0grass after the event is over.\u00a0Aligning the visceral sport so directly with the Trump White House also puts the UFC in the middle of a politicized culture war at the exact moment it\u2019ll have its highest exposure to the general public.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLosing money is never fun. I did that for quite a few years in the early days, but you\u00a0have to\u00a0jump on an opportunity like this, no matter what it costs you,\u201d says White.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tMark Shapiro, the president and COO of TKO, told Wall Street analysts in February that the event will cost the company \u201cupwards of $60 million,\u201d and that it \u201ccould move north.\u201d TKO\u00a0expects to\u00a0lose\u00a0about $30 million\u00a0on UFC Freedom 250,\u00a0even after securing high-profile sponsorship deals from the likes of Ram Trucks, Crypto dot com and Monster Energy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u00a0want to\u00a0be clear about something: We will not profit from the White House event independently. We will not be making money on America\u2019s 250th anniversary,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cThis is an investment for the long term. This is about earned media.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is about sampling, new fans, casual viewers, a spectacle on a stage that will ultimately expand our audience, our viewership, and our success on\u00a0Paramount+,\u201d he added. \u201cWe see this once-in-a-lifetime stage as a strategic investment to drive subscriber acquisition at\u00a0Paramount+, massive audience sampling for the UFC overall, and Super Bowl-like earned media across the globe.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tParamount\u00a0fully expects to capitalize on the moment, now six months into their\u00a0seven-year\u00a0deal.\u00a0Efrain Miron, head of content strategy and licensing for Paramount direct-to-consumer\u00a0tells THR<\/em> that the company has already been closely\u00a0monitoring\u00a0the data.\u00a0

\u201cOne of the things that\u2019s been really cool about seeing this UFC audience show up \u2014 which again is not a monolith, but it\u2019s the audience so far that has shown up \u2014 is that we have found that on average, the folks watching UFC on\u00a0Paramount+\u00a0are 15 years younger than our average audience before UFC, so for us that\u2019s a massive unlock,\u201d he says.\u00a0\u201cWe also then\u00a0observe\u00a0what they are watching when they show up on the platform.\u00a0So far, some of those signals have been really interesting.\u00a0You have a lot of\u00a0crossover\u00a0with the South\u00a0Park<\/em> audience, so\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0been interesting for us.\u00a0So\u00a0then we take all that\u00a0information\u00a0and we say, okay, how do we make sure that when this audience shows up so\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0getting the right recommendations on the service?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe goal is to get UFC fans to watch more content on\u00a0Paramount+, and to introduce more fans to the UFC and grow that business, helping to amortize the cost of the long-term deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBorsari says that his team has been in near daily contact with\u00a0Paramount\u00a0executives in the lead-up to the White House event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI love the excitement from their side, how excited they are to be in the business with us,\u201d says White, who adds that \u201cI think\u00a0Landman<\/em>\u00a0is the greatest show ever in the history of television.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBut of more significance to the UFC is how\u00a0Paramount+ dramatically reduces the friction to watch its fights. The profile of the White House event could make that clearer for people who\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0aware of what the change in streaming platforms really means.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen we were on ESPN, we were behind two paywalls. You had to pay for ESPN+, and then you had to pay for the pay-per-view,\u201d White says. \u201cWith the\u00a0Paramount+ deal, it costs less for the year than it did for one pay-per-view, and you get everything UFC\u00a0plus\u00a0you get all the other great programming.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tExecutives from both TKO and Paramount are\u00a0banking\u00a0on enormous tune-in, from both hardcore MMA fans and curious gawkers, to\u00a0ultimately benefit\u00a0both of them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tLate last month, an enormous structure was erected on the South Lawn, towering over the White House\u00a0mansion\u00a0behind it, and sparking intrigue on Instagram, X, and other social platforms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe structure is called \u201cThe Claw,\u201d says White, and it was built in Belgium before\u00a0being\u00a0shipped to Philadelphia, where it was loaded onto\u00a0trucks and brought to D.C.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe custom structure is specifically meant to deliver the vision White has for the event, providing cover and lighting without obstructing any views.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAll I want to see during this fight is the White House, the full White House,\u201d White says. \u201cI\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want to see a light, a microphone, any type of rigging, and if the fight goes the other way, I want to see the\u00a0[Washington\u00a0Monument],\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0it. Those are the only things I want to see.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThere are a number of things that we\u2019re doing to try and take advantage of where we are and\u00a0show a lot of respect and admiration for this location, which is one of the most iconic buildings in America,\u201d says Borsari.\u00a0\u201cWe had to take\u00a0a number of\u00a0visits to the White House to take\u00a0very accurate\u00a0laser measurements of the south lawn to make sure that we could put the structure that we wanted in place. And the whole idea of putting that structure in place was to create the biggest window possible and frame the White House in the background in all our wide shots throughout the night.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe company is planning similarly made-for-TV moments, like\u00a0a press conference and\u00a0weigh-ins at the Lincoln Memorial, and there will be an 85,000 ticket fan fest taking place in the Ellipse adjacent to the White House complex, with Zac Brown Band headlining on June 13, and a watch party for the\u00a0fights\u00a0the following evening.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s\u00a0not clear if one of the original ideas, which would see the fighters walk out to the\u00a0Octagon from the Oval Office, will come to fruition, though the UFC has made custom championship belts for the winners of the bouts.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTickets for the fan fest were distributed for free to fans, but tickets to the event itself remain scarce\u00a0and invite-only. The lions share\u00a0belong\u00a0to Trump, White says. \u201cI think\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0up to 1,200 now. I have 300, Ari Emanuel has 400.\u201d The remaining tickets will be distributed to members of the military.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tBut White and Borsari have also been\u00a0planning out\u00a0the programming that will fill the downtime between fights. Normally, in an arena, that would include sizzle reels, hype videos, and\u00a0raucous\u00a0music. UFC Freedom 250 will be a little different.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWhite was coy about what other things they\u00a0have\u00a0planned that night, though expect a hefty dose of patriotic programming.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThis is a very patriotic moment for us to integrate a little bit about the history of this country, a little bit about celebrating our heroes and celebrating our independence,\u201d says Borsari.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhat this fight is\u00a0really all\u00a0about, and why\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0doing it at the White House, is\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0the 250th birthday of America.\u00a0So\u00a0from the first fight of the night until the main event, we will tell the story of America,\u201d White says, rebuffing the notion that he wants the event to be seen as a political one. \u201cYou\u2019ve\u00a0got the far right,\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0got the far left, and people\u00a0thinking\u00a0that this is going to be like some type of political thing. This is\u00a0the\u00a0250th birthday\u00a0of\u00a0America.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0the story that\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0going to tell. If you are American, this is relevant to you as an American. Everybody, no matter what your politics are, or\u00a0any of that\u00a0other bullshit.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course,\u00a0the political\u00a0optics are tough to ignore.\u00a0The event, after all, was sparked by a suggestion from President Trump, and it will be held on his 80th\u00a0birthday, with a slew of high-profile members of Congress and his administration expected to attend.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd Paramount is in the midst of attempting to complete a\u00a0$111 billion\u00a0mega-merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, which is still undergoing regulatory review.\u00a0The event may not be about politics, but politics will be humming in the background regardless.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTrump, of course, is an avid consumer and critic of media, which may explain his enthusiasm for the event, knowing how unprecedented it is.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOn May 6, he hosted the fighters competing at the event in the Oval Office for a photo-op,\u00a0showing off\u00a0renderings of the arena in front of one of the custom championship belts. Trump reminisced about giving White and UFC a shot at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic\u00a0City, before\u00a0MMA was widely accepted as a legitimate sport.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0get any arenas because it was so violent. I was able to give them the first four or five fights,\u201d he recalled.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tOf course, there are still plenty of unknowns.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tWhite recalls attending a dinner in the Rose Garden last month, a dinner that opened his eyes to the challenges of hosting a series\u00a0of\u00a0fights outdoors, in\u00a0Washington\u00a0D.C., in June.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe three big problems, as far as I am seeing right now, are rain, lightning, and a ton of bugs,\u201d White says, recalling black gnats (\u201cI\u2019m talking clusters of them\u201d) swarming guests at the dinner.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAs soon as I left the White House, I called my head of production\u00a0Craig\u00a0[Borsari], and\u00a0said the black fly experience that I just had\u00a0is brutal,\u201d he adds.\u00a0\u201cSo\u00a0imagine this massive powerful claw, and the lights that are going to come with\u00a0it,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0going to have gnats, moths,\u00a0maybe bats. I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0know\u00a0what the hell\u2019s\u00a0going to show up, but you know these\u00a0are\u00a0all the things that you\u00a0have to\u00a0think of leading up to this thing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd he notes that fighting outdoors is not ideal, especially if the weather is too hot, or too wet. It was a concern\u00a0also\u00a0raised by Joe Rogan, the podcaster, comic and UFC commentator, who will be\u00a0working\u00a0the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tRogan, however, is still bought\u00a0in to\u00a0the idea, embracing the unprecedented nature of the whole thing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0going to be a spectacle. Whether I was there or not, I would be watching 100 percent,\u201d Rogan said on his podcast May 29.\u00a0\u201cI think\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0awesome that Trump, this is one of the things that I like about him.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0like,\u00a0\u2018Fuck it.\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0do it.\u2019\u00a0He\u00a0puts on\u00a0cage fights on the White House lawn.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0nuts.\u00a0He\u2019s\u00a0fearless.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tTrump, whose personal interest in crafting media spectacles is well-documented, seems to share that point-of-view. Talking to the UFC fighters in the Oval, he turned to the cameras in the room and said matter-of-factly: \u201cThis will be the greatest show on earth.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
