\nTony Dokoupil shared some heartfelt words on CBS Evening News<\/em> about his former colleague Scott Pelley after the veteran journalist was fired on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\n\tDuring Wednesday\u2019s show, Dokoupil \u2014 who was appointed anchor of the evening newscast by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss at the start of her tenure last year \u2014 took a moment to praise Pelley\u2019s career.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWhen I started at CBS, Scott Pelley was in this very chair, and still doing a dozen stories a year for\u00a060\u00a0Minutes.\u00a0<\/em>And amid all of that, still meeting every new correspondent to share his view of the mission here,\u201d he said. \u201cHe believed freedom of the press, to quote\u00a0[James] Madison, was \u2018the right that guaranteed all the others.\u2019 And the stakes are always that high in that, if you\u2019d made it to CBS News, you were among the best in the world. He worked every single day to live up to that standard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA compilation of some of Pelley\u2019s work at CBS over the years, after he joined the network in 1989, was then played. The video featured the journalist\u2019s coverage from the field of 9\/11, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Russia-Ukraine War and more, as well as his many presidential interviews and the dozens of Emmys he received for his work.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe was in some ways a man from another era, and that\u2019s not a knock,\u201d Dokoupil said in a voiceover. \u201cHe didn\u2019t watch the competition, he said, because he knew who he was. A journalist who valued truth at all costs. And always kept alive the memory of colleagues killed in the field \u2014 a reminder that his chosen line of work could be a dangerous one.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTo conclude the tribute, the anchor also noted how Pelley changed the CBS Evening News<\/em> logo from \u201cwith Scott Pelley\u201d to \u201cwith all of us.\u201d Dokoupil added, \u201cWell, Scott, from all of us, thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Tuesday, The Hollywood Reporte<\/em>r learned that the veteran\u00a060 Minutes\u00a0<\/em>correspondent was fired by the network. This decision came after Pelley clashed with the show\u2019s new executive producer, Nick Bilton, during a\u00a0heated meeting\u00a0with staff the day prior.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the meeting, Pelley slammed Weiss, accusing her of \u201cmurdering\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>. She does not love this place; she was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing his firing, Pelley released a lengthy statement, saying in part, \u201cIncompetence and unprofessionalism in the new management have wreaked havoc.\u00a0\u2026 The collapse of values at the top has become untenable. The leadership of\u00a060 Minutes<\/em>\u00a0is no longer recognizable. The principles I hold dear are gone, and so I must leave as well.\u201d<\/p>\n
