\n\tThings got a little morbid at SXSW London\u2018sheadline Michelle Obama session on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe former first lady was speaking with her brother, Craig Robinson, at a live recording of their podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson<\/em>. The year-old podcast usually involves a guest, but Obama kicked off the session by declaring they\u2019d be \u201cflipping the script\u201d and, sans guest, would be interviewing each other.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe conversation was dappled with sibling banter, of course, as Obama teased her older brother over being a \u201cfinance bro\u201d and his marriages, prompting audience laughter. It also featured moments of touching sincerity, such as when Robinson said his little sister \u201chas been this personality since she was three or four years old.\u201d They discussed how their mother\u2019s death has made them reflect on the time they have left and what they want to do with it.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe conversation centered on Obama and Robinson\u2019s respective professional journeys and the decisions that would shape their careers, from their parents to relationships and crucial life lessons learned along the way. On recently joining the podcast space, Obama, author of the best-selling memoir Becoming<\/em>, told attendees: \u201cIt\u2019s that courageous thing, right? The feeling that, \u2018Okay, I guess we can do this, because we did all these other things.\u2019 Bravery makes you try anything at any age. And I think, for me, I\u2019ve just gotten used to, \u2018Okay, we\u2019re going to do this. I live in the White House!\u2019 First Lady, that wasn\u2019t my plan!\u201d she declared, as the audience applauded, \u201cbut I think staying courageous and curious and open, and vulnerable and willing to share.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tShe added about not fearing the career change post-politics: \u201cI haven\u2019t met a white man [who] talks about imposter syndrome.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRobinson thanked their podcast team before praising his sister. \u201cIt really is a neat feeling, and every time we get together, it\u2019s like a reunion. This has really been a pivot that\u2019s been a whole lot of fun, and it\u2019s really nice to hang out with my little sister,\u201d with audience members \u201caww\u201ding. \u201cAnd the most remarkable thing is I know how you guys look up to her\u2026 People get so emotional [around Obama], and I\u2019m like, \u2018Her?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tObama continued: \u201cThis is probably my last chapter from a career standpoint. I am 62 years old. We could be grandparents! But we are not.\u201d She told a touching story about her mother, Marian, who died in 2024, and caring for her at the end of her life. \u201cEven with her jaded, stoic approach to things, I was sitting with her on the couch watching TV and we had just come back from a doctor\u2019s appointment, [we] didn\u2019t get great news,\u201d said Obama. \u201cAnd we were watching Judge Judy<\/em>, and she said, \u2018Wow, that was quick.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018What are you talking about, mom?\u2019 and she said, \u2018Life.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWe\u2019ve been out of the White House for 10 years, and I swear it went like that,\u201d she added. \u201cMy daughters will be 28 and 25 this year. So, [for] this next chapter, I want to be mindful about it, so that it doesn\u2019t just slip away. I want to be clear about how I\u2019m spending my time, how much of it I\u2019m giving away to others [and] what I\u2019m choosing to do. How it makes me feel. The choices that I make now are going to be for me, not for my husband, not for my kids, not for the country, not for the world, because this is it. And at some point, it\u2019s important for our generation to step out of the way and be prepared to step out of the way so that the next generation can really sit in these seats.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRobinson joked that he was recently told he only has about 19 summers left in his life. \u201cThat\u2019s a lot of summers!\u201d said Obama. \u201cBut if I could impart any advice to you,\u201d said her brother, \u201cit would be: \u2018Don\u2019t sleep on this third act. Embrace the third act.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tObama concurred and said her biggest piece of advice for young people would be to relish the process. \u201cLearn to enjoy the process, whatever your process is, because that\u2019s where you develop the skills\u2026 [Getting to] the White House, it takes time. It took a level of persistence. There was a whole lot of backlash. Was I prepared for it? Was Barack prepared for it? Heck yeah \u2014\u00a0all the other things we had done, it leads up to being ready for the thing you don\u2019t even know that you\u2019re going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarly in the session, the siblings began by reflecting on their childhoods growing up in a working-class neighborhood in Chicago, and the experiences that led them on contrasting career paths. Obama confessed that, upon joining a corporate law firm following her time at Harvard Law School, she discovered: \u201cOh my god, I don\u2019t like law. Thank you to all the lawyers, no shade,\u201d she said, addressing the crowd, \u201cbut it just wasn\u2019t for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRobinson, a former pro basketballer and coach, lauded their parents \u2014\u00a0Fraser and Marian Robinson \u2014\u00a0for encouraging him to go to Manchester, England, to play for the\u00a0Manchester Giants\u00a0in the\u00a0British Basketball League. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t scary for me, because as I progressed in the sport and got better, it was the dream that, \u2018Oh, okay, maybe I can play professionally,\u2019 so I wanted to go try it,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a tribute to my parents that they never held us back because of their own fear. So, as scared as my mom was, they both were like, \u2018Alright, go and do it, now\u2019s the time to do it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tObama chimed in: \u201cI have to take a moment, just [to] give tribute to our parents. They were uniquely gifted in pushing us to do things that they wouldn\u2019t themselves, and we\u2019re parents now,\u201d added Obama, who shares daughters Sasha and Malia with her husband, \u201cand you know the hardest thing in the world to do is to let your kids try more things.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tObama continued that their parents \u201cdid not feel like our lives were theirs to manage,\u201d and that the hands-off approach to parenting allowed their children to figure out life on their own terms, whether it was \u201csituations with teachers that were unfair, clashes with friends. And that\u2019s very different from how people parent today. Everybody\u2019s trying to curate their kids\u2019 experiences [these days].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLater in life, this would help Obama navigate her way through a major career \u201cswerve\u201d when she realized she no longer wanted to work in law. Her feeling was exacerbated by the death of her father in 1991, and as well as one of her friends, who passed suddenly from cancer. \u201cIf I were to die tomorrow, is this where I want to be?\u201d she remembered thinking. \u201cThe 47th floor of a corporate firm \u2014\u00a0I could see the neighborhood where I came from my fancy office, but I wasn\u2019t connected to it\u2026 And I also met Barack Obama at the time, who was the master swerver, because he did the opposite of everything he was supposed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was at this time she learnt some life advice that Obama would go on to give to her own daughters: \u201cGet used to living smaller than you need to, so that you can do the things you want to do when they present themselves. Living small, financially, allows you to stay free of the golden handcuffs.\u201d<\/p>\n
