Bassam Tariq, Liz Garbus, and Elizabeth Wolff are set to receive alumni of distinction awards during this year’s Gotham Week Honors.

The awards recognize their long relationships with The Gotham and continued contributions to the independent filmmaking community.

Tariq first participated in The Gotham’s programs in 2012, when he brought These Birds Walk to the IFP Documentary Lab and Independent Film Week. His latest feature in Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which is set to hit select theaters on Sept. 25 after its Toronto Film Festival world premiere.

Garbus and Wolff are alums of the Gotham Week Project Market’s documentaries section, with Garbus bringing The Farm: Angola USA there in 1997 and Girlhood there in 2002 and Wolff bringing The Feminist Tapes, which Garbus executive produced, there in 2024. Their latest project, which they co-directed, is the Billy Jean King documentary Give Me the Ball! The film is set to be released in select theaters and on ESPN on Nov. 22.

Gotham Week will also screen Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother as well as Give Me the Ball!, Tip Toe and Seeds and The Fisherman.

In addition, Rachael J. Morrison’s Joybubbles will receive the Best Film Coming to a Cinema Near You award. The documentary, which was part of the 2022 Gotham Week Project Market, centers around a blind boy who discovers he can control the global telephone system by whistling a certain tune.

“We’re so proud to unveil this year’s honorees and expanded screening lineup, which together reflect the breadth, originality, and ambition of independent storytelling today,” The Gotham managing director Kia Brooks said in a statement. “This year’s program reflects the lasting relationships The Gotham builds with its community, as artists and projects return in new moments of their creative journeys and new work is celebrated. Together, the Honors and Screenings celebrate the continued achievements of our alumni while creating opportunities for audiences to discover bold new work and engage with the artists behind it.”

Gotham Week honors will also recognize breakout filmmakers and projects from the Gotham Week Project Market in the following sections: documentaries, US features in development, US shorts to features and global producers hub.
