HBO Max has renewed Stuart Fails to Save the Universe for a second season. The pickup for the Big Bang Theory spinoff comes four weeks into its 10-episode first season, which HBO Max says is among its biggest comedy debuts worldwide (though without providing concrete numbers).

As the title suggests, the show centers on Stuart (Kevin Sussman), who is plunged into a multiverse of misadventures after accidentally breaking a device built by Sheldon and Leonard. Big Bang Theory alumni Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie also star in the series, which comes from Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady (the creators of the original series) and Zak Penn.

“We’re delighted with how this hilarious, genre-bending show from Chuck, Zak, and Bill has connected with the audience, both devotees of The Big Bang Theory and new fans alike,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vp HBO Programming and head of comedy series for HBO and HBO Max. “Along with everyone else, we can’t wait to see the worlds they conjure for these beloved characters next season.”

Several other Big Bang Theory characters — or the alt-universe versions thereof — have made appearances on the show through its first four episodes, with others to come later in the season.

“Chuck, Zak, and Bill delivered something truly special with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe — a completely original take on one of the most beloved franchises of all time that captures the unique essence that made ‘The Big Bang Theory’ so special,” said Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD U.S. Networks. “It’s been an absolute joy to see audiences embrace this next iteration so passionately, and we can’t wait to continue exploring the multiverse in season two.”

Warner Bros. TV, Lorre’s long-time studio home, produces the series. Lorre, Penn and Prady executive produce with Kyle Newacheck, who also directs multiple episodes.
