Daredevil couple Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus climbed to the top of the Empire State Building spire on Wednesday.

The duo unveiled a pro-peace banner which read: “When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.”

When they descended to a lower platform, Beerkus took a knee and proposed to Nikolau (who reportedly said yes).

Nikolau and Beerkus starred in the 2024 Netflix documentary Skywalkers: A Love Story, where the couple traversed the top of the world’s second-highest skyscraper. This stunt was not part of the Netflix project.

In the clip below, CNN’s senior national security analyst Juliette Kayyem wasn’t impressed, and said, “This is performative. I’m all for love, I’m all for romance. This is egregious for about 10,000 different reasons and these people will end up in jail.”

The Empire State Building was a tad more chill than CNN, issuing this statement, according to ABC 7: “There was at no time danger to tenants, visitors, and Empire State Building Observation Deck guests. It is to be emphasized that the Empire State Building Observation Deck, atop the World’s Most Famous Building in the center of New York City, does offer a practical way for the most memorable marriage proposals.”

ABC reported that police officers met the couple and placed them into custody.

Skywalkers: A Love Story arrived on Netflix in July 2024. A logline for the doc reads, “Two real-life daredevils test the limits of their love and trust by illegally scaling one of the world’s tallest buildings to perform an acrobatic stunt.”
